Position Description

As a Navy Certified Diesel Engine Inspector (DEI), you will be on a team that is evaluating and managing the delivery of new amphibious ships and landing craft to the fleet. You will work closely with Government, providing technical program support to the Hull, Mechanical, and Electrical (HM&E) Assistant Program Manager (APM) with oversight of original equipment manufacturer (OEM) first article testing; shipyard installation, alignment and inspections; auxiliary support system installation, inspections, testing, and light off; engine safety checkouts, light off and grooming; tests and trials, and repairs. This position is contingent upon your ability to obtain/maintain an active clearance.

Serco supports the US Navy as a prime contractor providing amphibious warfare and expeditionary professional support services. Our Amphibious Warfare Operation provides critical services to nearly all US Navy amphibious ships and craft.

In this role, you will:

  • Provide oversight of first article testing; shipyard installation, alignment and inspections.
  • Provide oversight of auxiliary support system installation, inspections, testing, and light off.
  • Conduct engine safe to start certifications.
  • Interface with the Navy diesel technical community working groups.
  • Provide program office support to evaluate design recommendations, equipment failure impacts and risks.


To be successful in this role, you will have

  • Current Navy Diesel Engine Inspector (DEI) certification.
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in an Engineering discipline with a minimum of fifteen (15) years of applicable experience, including two years in a supervisory capacity. (Military experience can be substituted for an engineering degree if four (4) or more years of specific work experience can be demonstrated in an analogous or higher-level position).
  • Must have and maintain a current DoD security clearance or be able to obtain an interim clearance prior to hire.
  • United States (U.S.) citizenship.
  • Ability to operate personal computers and have good knowledge and operational abilities with Microsoft Office tools.
  • Ability to travel (less than 10%) to support DEI activities in a shipyard, naval facility, or OEM manufacturing facility. Some work may occur within an industrial field office, outdoors and/or aboard ship while the ship is undergoing construction, alteration, activation, overhaul, repair, and/or underway trials. Walking and climbing throughout the ship, to accomplish ship checks, may be required. Exposure to high noise levels, uncomfortable temperatures, heights, or other industrial safety conditions will require use of personal protective clothing and equipment.

Additional desired experience and skills:

  • Extensive prior military service operational experience and DEI certification, supporting machinery engineering efforts for shipbuilding and/or operation U.S. Navy Ship programs is HIGHLY preferred
  • Surface Combatant or Amphibious warship ship and/or craft construction or ship repair work experience is ideal.
