Position Description

Serco Inc. is looking for a highly motivated UUV Test Engineer to support the Naval information Warfare Center (NIWC), you will work on a broad portfolio of Autonomous Maritime Systems (AMS) programs in San Diego, CA geographic region.


 This position is contingent upon your ability to maintain an active clearance. This position is also contingent upon award of contract. 


The UUV Test Engineer provides support in testing unmanned air, surface, and undersea vehicles (UxV) and systems within project/program, conducting developmental/operational testing, providing analysis and solution recommendations. Expertise and work efforts are focused on the analysis of customer's business goals, objectives, needs and the general business environment to solve technical problems. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Reports to a Program Manager or head of a unit/department under limited supervision. This position will support onsite NIWC customer facilities in San Diego, CA along with some remote support.


In this role, you will:


Be familiar with a variety of the field testing concepts, practices, and procedures. Develop, maintain, and upgrade automated test scripts and architectures for UxV products. Evaluate, recommend, and implement automated test tools and general test strategies. Develop, publish, and implement test plans, analyze test results, and generate test reports for systems under test. Rely on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.

  • Provide autonomous systems and maritime subject matter expertise in testing of unmanned vehicle (UxV) systems
  • Analyze UxV system designs, specifications, and technical data to determine whether various systems are ready for developmental/operational testing
  • Analyze results from UxV systems and capabilities under test/evaluation to ensure performance successfully meets engineering specifications and operational requirements
  • Investigate system failures, evaluate corrective alternatives, and implement actions to ensure UxV systems maintain safe, effective operations and minimize/eliminate potential future system deficiencies
  • Formulate methods and processes which will increase safety, efficiency, and readiness


To be successful in the role, you will need:


  • Minimum 5 years of maritime systems engineering experience, including a minimum of 2 years of experience in operational test planning, executing, and reporting
  • Current valid U.S. passport
  • Current active SECRET clearance
  • Knowledge of various types of autonomous maritime systems (AUVs/UUVs/ROVs/USVs)
  • Proficiency in MS Office products to include Word, Power Point and Excel
  • The ability to work aboard large ships and within Fleet installations

Preferred Job Requirements:


  • Bachelor of Science degree
  • At least 3 years of experience designing, executing, and reporting on operational tests
  • At least 3 years of experience analyzing and reporting on the test results of side scan sonar Automated Target Recognition (ATR) algorithms used on unmanned underwater vehicles
  • The ability to support the installation, integration, testing, and removal of multiple other payloads and shipboard systems, including towed and hull-mounted sonars, Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV) launchers, Mine Countermeasures systems, classified Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) systems, and high-capacity data transmission systems
  • Ability to operate Naval Small Craft such as 11M Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats (RHIB); may include holding a USCG Captain’s license

Travel Requirements:


  • Travel and at-sea watch standing will be required
  • Minimum 30% to 50% travel CONUS/OCONUS
