Position Description

Serco Inc. is seeking an experienced, highly motivated, hands-on Director of Financial Planning to be a senior leader within the corporate FP&A function and oversee all aspects of the budgeting and forecasting process.  


This role calls for a dynamic, well-rounded performer who thrives in a fast-paced, demanding environment. Key attributes we are seeking for this role include both the willingness to dig deeply into details, as well as the ability to assess the big picture.  The selected individual will consistently demonstrate high levels of technical and professional skill and quickly assimilate new knowledge. The successful candidate will have a strong financial planning and analysis background with significant experience in professional services and government contracting.  The Director of Financial Planning will utilize their financial analysis modeling and reporting experience to help the organization understand financial results and plan for future growth.  


This multi-faceted role will also entail working closely with operations leadership and subject matter experts both inside and outside of Finance.  Based in our Herndon, VA Headquarters, the person in this role will work closely with users in accounting operations, tax and business finance to analyze financial and non-financial data as well as implement system enhancements and participate in improvement initiatives related to finance and related business systems. 

The person in this role must have the ability to manage tight deadlines and have strong analytical, technical and problem solving skills complemented by excellent written and verbal communication skills including the ability to distill complex information into clear data-driven insights.



As the leader within the FP&A function, the Director of Financial Planning will be responsible for oversight of all aspects of the development of internal reporting and analysis used by senior management throughout the organization to understand results and influence long term and strategic decisions. This position is responsible for analyzing and presenting data from our primary financial and planning applications, Deltek Costpoint and Oracle EPM Cloud. This position positively affects the company performance and positions the incumbent for future growth and development opportunities.  


Responsibilities of this role include:

  • Leadership of the financial forecasting function, including reporting on financial performance for leadership reviews and providing analysis on operational and working capital performance. This position directly oversees a team of 4 data analysts and technical specialists.      
  • Formulating departmental strategy and implementing plans to achieve results consistent with broader company goals.
  • Preparation of monthly “LBE” forecasting submissions and annual direct and indirect budgeting cycle in conjunction with business finance leads. Oversight of monthly program and financial submission of actual results to corporate consolidation team in the UK.
  • Preparation of working capital and cash flow statements with detailed analysis.
  • Modeling and creating forecasts of balance sheets and cash flow statements.
  • Evaluating financial status and risks by analyzing actual results in comparison with budgets and forecasts while working closely with the finance team to ensure accurate financial reporting and decision support.
  • Driving and providing thought leadership in improving current methods used in the collection of data, coordinating information requirements, developing automated financial reporting/forecasting tools, and creating standard and ad-hoc reports.
  • Mentoring corporate department stakeholders and operations leaders to promote a better understanding of financial tools and metrics designed to enhance profitability.



  • Requires a Bachelor's Degree in area of specialty or equivalent and at least 10 years of experience in the field or in a related area.
  • 6 or more years of experience leading and developing a team.
  • 10 or more years of experience in a government contracting environment. Thorough knowledge of indirect rate structures and experience with scenario modeling. Strong working knowledge of government contracting regulations including CAS, FAR and JTR.
  • Experience in reporting and analysis using Oracle EPM Cloud strongly preferred.
  • Advanced Proficiency in MS Excel Required. Experience developing tools with MS-Access a plus.
  • Working knowledge of Deltek Costpoint General Ledger and Project Ledger modules required.
  • The position requires excellent analytical and critical-thinking skills. 
  • Must be a citizen of the United States.
