Position Description

Serco IP Services, part of Serco North America, is seeking a Business Analyst for Intellectual Property Services (IPS) and Records Services (RS) who supports multiple patent processing lines of business.

 

The Technical Writer will gather information from users, developers, and other stakeholders to document software feature requests and proposed software functionality, ensuring effective communication across stakeholder groups so that the end product meets user needs. The ideal candidate would operate effectively independently within a cooperative team environment. This is an ideal job for a candidate who would like to make significant contributions to the patent industry while working in a hybrid/remote work environment based in the beautiful surroundings of the Shenandoah Valley in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

 

In this Technical Writer role, you will:

  • Work both independently and collaboratively with Trainers and other stakeholders to develop user documentation and training that ensures users understand changes to patent processing software they rely on for their daily work. 
  • Maintain manuals, policy documents, training materials and similar content so that it consistently reflects current features, policies, and best practices.
  • Write standardized material for reports, manuals, briefs, proposals, instruction books, catalogs, and related technical and administrative publications concerned with work methods and procedures.
  • Acquire an understanding of the work performed by various end users to understand how software functions to support specific work activities and overall business needs
  • Engage multiple stakeholders, recognize different perspectives
  • Prepare written descriptions and visualizations of requested software features
  • Represent users in discussing desired software functionality with developers, correct assumptions of developers and users
  • Test software prototypes for expected functionality; provide clear written and verbal descriptions of observed issues to developers
  • Create user guides and related documentation to support new software releases
  • Prepare and maintain policy and process documents to support other areas of the organization
  • Conduct training and work with Training staff to ensure effective curricula

Qualifications

To be successful in this Business Analyst role, you will have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent 
  • 2 years related experience
  • Degree in science or engineering, IT, business, technical writing, education, or related fields is desirable
  • Familiarity with software development and IT concepts and practices is desirable
  • Travel: Some travel may be required

 

Desired

  • Prior experience working with IT or technical teams is desirable
  • Prior experience with or knowledge of patents is desirable
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent documentation and technical writing skillsCuriosity: ability to ask questions and listen; see issues from multiple perspectives; problem solving
  • Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a technical work environment.
  • Confidence working with technical experts outside your field of expertise
