Position Description

Serco IP Services, part of Serco North America, is seeking a Software Engineer I for Intellectual Property Services (IPS) and Records Services (RS) who supports multiple patent processing lines of business.


The Software Engineer for the Intellectual Property Services (IPS) and Records Services (RS) ensures effective technical toolset development that enable end users to successfully accomplish business tasks. This includes support and refinement of existing applications as well as design, development, and implementation of new technical solutions that address business needs. Solutions range from client data entry to server automation and artificial intelligence.


The Software Engineer will work within a small team of dedicated IT professionals in Harrisonburg VA. The ideal candidate would operate effectively independently within a cooperative team environment. This is an ideal job for a candidate who would like to make significant contributions to the patent industry while working in a hybrid/remote work environment based in the beautiful surroundings of the Shenandoah Valley in Harrisonburg, Virginia.


In this Software Engineer I role, you will:

  • Design, modify, develop, write, and implement client and server software applications
  • Work closely with a small, talented team consisting of software engineers, knowledge management and analysts to translate user needs into technical requirements.
  • Support and debug existing applications.
  • Prototype testing and design evaluation.
  • Support and/or install software applications/operating systems.
  • Participate in the testing process through test review and analysis, test witnessing, and certification of software.
  • Be familiar with standard software development concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Apply experience and training to creative solutions to meet user requirements.


To be successful in this Software Engineer role, you will have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 0-2 years of combined experience in IT related field.
  • Capability in coding, designing, and testing software applications.
  • Understanding of Object-Oriented Programming and Data Structures.
  • Understanding of Version Control and modern development frameworks and methods.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, with a focus on rapport-building, listening, and questioning skills.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective writing and documentation skills.
  • Willingness and Desire to learn new technologies and skills.
  • Ability to conduct research into a wide range of computing solutions as required.
  • Ability to absorb and retain information quickly.
  • Highly self-motivated and directed.
  • Keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks quickly.
  • Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment. 


  • MS .NET, C#, SQL, Visual Studio experience desirable.
