Serco, Inc. has an immediate need for a Senior Software Engineer supporting our Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) program in Herndon, VA. Serco supports CMS, a federal agency within the United States Department of Health and Human Services that administers the Medicare program and works in partnership with state governments to continue supporting eligibility determinations for consumers purchasing health insurance through the Federal Health Insurance Exchanges.


In this role, you will:


  • Design and develop core components/services which are flexible, extensible, multi-tier, scalable, high performance and reliable applications of an advanced complex software system.
  • Object Oriented Analysis, Design, development of software components and applications
  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring to junior developers
  • Considered to be the top-level contributor/specialist
  • Analyze requirement specifications, carry out feasibility analysis and estimating effort
  • Develop use cases and design alternatives in accordance with business requirements
  • Interact with Product Owners and business analysts across geographies to leverage expertise and take development to the next level
  • Work effectively in all phases of the software development life-cycle; from requirements gathering to design, implementation, testing, and release, and help team members to do the same to accomplish deliverables on time
  • Contribute to institutionalizing the industry standard best software engineering processes, practices and methodologies
  • Participate in code reviews, working with business analysts and testers to effectively document and validate all implementations
  • Analyze and troubleshoot application issues in a timely fashion.
  • Provides technical support to project team members.
  • Maintain and implement new development standards
  • Work with other Engineers in planning, prioritizing and executing assigned tasks within deadlines.


To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Requires a Bachelor`s degree and 8-10 years of related experience
  • 3 years of technical lead experience
  • Advanced knowledge of Java, relevant open-source frameworks like Spring, Hibernate
  • Experience building RESTful and SOAP APIs
  • Ability to understand and discuss technical concepts, schedule tradeoffs and opportunistic new ideas with technical employees.
  • Advanced experience designing and developing with various java-based technologies.
  • Experience with GIT, Maven , and modern IDE’s (Eclipse/IntelliJ)
  • Advanced knowledge on SQL and SQL technologies.
  • Understanding of Agile methodologies
  • Ability to work independently and support team in performing complicated tasks
  • Understanding of Enterprise Architecture and IT systems
  • Process minded, good presentation and communication skills.
  • A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.

Additional desired skills and experience:


  • Expertise in interpreting the data from Process Mining / Task Mining
  • Experience with Robotic Process Automation or Process Redesign or Optimization
